2001: Happy 30th Birthday, Classical WTMI!Posted October 2001; Updated October 2002 and June 2003.
|
![]() 30 years with essentially the same format is quite a milestone in any radio market!
|
On March 19, 2001, a number of WTMI personalities and about 60 listeners and clients gathered at the gourmet Primavera Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale (830 E. Oakland Park Boulevard) to celebrate WTMI's 30th birthday.
Invitees were chosen in a contest. Little did they suspect that classical WTMI would be just a memory a scant 9 1/2 months later! A buffet of gourmet Italian cuisine was served by the Primavera Restaurant. Pictured below are WTMI personalities Harry Sharp, Lyn Farmer, Dee Silver, Jonathan Mandel, and Angela Christi. (Lyn also writes restaurant reviews in Showtime, the Sun-Sentinel's Friday entertainment tabloid section.)
Also pictured below are some of the entries (on display at the party) relating to WTMI and its 30-year history. Included were a WTMI license plate (at right), several editions of the WTMI magazine, The Fugue (at left), and various photos and newspaper clippings. Fall 2002 Note: Nine months later, WTMI and its classical music were gone, unfortunately replaced by the new owner Cox with dance music on WPYM, Party 93.1. Many of the WTMI alumni are now with WKAT "Classical 1360", which went on the air September 19, 2002. Dee Silvers is now program director. See more articles about WTMI in South Florida Radio History. Summer 2003 Note: Now Dee Silvers and Bach & Roll are history at WKAT. February 2005 Note: Classical WKAT is now history. It's a talk station now.
