On Monday's manCow, I heard an ID sayin We'll see how long THAT lasts.
"The station is designed exclusively for men, although women are more than invited to listen" says ManTalk 640's tongue-in-cheek news release. "They just can’t complain about it."
Wanna bet?
ManCow's Morning Madhouse --
6 AM to noon
The Jim Rome Show -- noon to 3
Don & Mike -- 3 to 7 PM
Tom Leykis -- 7 to 10 PM
Rusty Humphries -- 10 PM to 1 AM
Tammy Bruce -- 1 to 4 AM
You've probably heard of the Man Cow before, but don't know what the fuss is about. Maybe you have seen this wild and crazy iconoclast briefly on Fox News Channel's Fox & Friends morning show.
Or maybe you've heard of his 2004 book,
Dad, Dames, Demons, and a Dwarf: My Trip Down Freedom Road (Illinois).
ManCow is arguably the best thing about the new format on 640.
ManCow was in the news a few months ago when the Chicago station where his show originated decided not to keep him. He has found a new home and he's still adding new affiliates for his crazy morning drive show.
His web site is ManCow.com.
Now you can listen to ManCow's Morning Madhouse every day, from 6 'til noon, on ManTalk 640.
The god of sports talk, ESPN personality Jim Rome, also has his
own three hour radio show, The Jim Rome Show a/k/a The Jungle. In
fact, his anthology CD is called Welcome
to the Jungle.
Rome's web site is JimRome.com.
Now you can listen to Jim Rome's sports talk every day, from noon 'til 3 PM, on ManTalk 640.
If sports talk isn't your cup of tea, may I recommend tuning to another James Crystal station, WFTL 850, for local talk with Joyce Kaufman (formerly on WJNA). Finally, she's back doing talk, from 2 'til 4 PM.

Originating in DC, Don Geronimo and Mike O’Meara have been together on the air for 20 years.
Assuming that their web site info is accurate, WMEN will be their first east-coast station south of the Carolinas.
My first impression of these guys was that they were a pair of puerile jerks. After ten minutes of listening to them making fun of former WJNA listeners and the entire state of Florida -- and playing Ken Pauli's voice mail -- I decided there must be something more intelligent to listen to on another non-James-Crystal station.
Regardless, Don & Mike's web site is DonAndMikeWebsite.com.
Don and Mike are on WMEN from 3 'til 7 PM.
Tom Leykis is back!
Formerly heard on WBZT in the 1990s, before it became Clear Channel, he's been gone from southeast Florida radio for a long time.
It is one weird show.
One of Leykis' recurring themes is "Blow me up, Tom." Callers say that and then you hear an explosion. Like "Ditto!" on the Rush Limbaugh show, it's an acquired taste.
He also has a bit called Leykis 101 to instruct listeners in the unfathomable: understanding women.
His web site is, predictably, BlowMeUpTom.com.
So Tom Leykis is finally back, from 7 'til 10 PM, on ManTalk 640, WMEN.
Rusty Humphries can now be heard in south Florida, possibly for the first time, except when he'd been substituting for another talker.

I've never heard the CD, but with tracks like Blowin' Up Saddam Is the Thing to Do and Little Help from Yasser's Friends, I wouldn't be surprised if they were rock & roll parodies. The perfect thing for an election night party.
Rusty has a new CD coming out soon, Thank Allah I'm a Jihad Boy. This collection of Rusty's hit parody songs is " Perfect for anyone who loves to laugh and who love America!" Info and links will be added here when available.
His web site is Talk2Rusty.com.
So Rusty Humphries can now be heard locally, from 10 PM 'til 1 AM, on ManTalk 640, WMEN.
Tammy Bruce is an enigma for people who like to label and categorize everyone. Per her web site (TammyBruce.com), "Tammy Bruce is an openly gay, pro-choice, gun owning, pro-death penalty, voted-for-President Bush progressive feminist."
I first discovered Tammy Bruce one night earlier this year when she was substituting for Laura Ingraham. Tammy was much better, IMHO.
Then I discovered Tammy could be heard weekends on WFTL, but only when she wasn't being pre-empted for sports.
I don't know why WMEN is delaying this hot, funny, and intelligent woman 'til the middle of the night (1 to 4 AM), and putting a sports show on at midday, especially when Jim Rome is competing with sports shows on three full-time sports stations in the Miami and Palm Beach markets! Well, no one asked me!
Finally, Tammy Bruce can now be heard daily, even if it's from 1 'til 4 AM, on ManTalk 640, WMEN.
The consultants will tell you one thing and the management and sales people will tell you something else, I'm sure. But here's my opinion.
WJNA had tried to serve too many audiences, pleasing none of them. I first listened to WJNA when it was essentially a big band station, reminding me of the old WDBF, which had been owned by bandleader Vic Knight.
Then they fiddled with the mix. Too many cooks?
Over a period of time it became a mixture of pop, oldies, jazz, and who knows what else, emphasizing the standards. There was a Sinatra program and also American Standards by the Sea, created by famous radio entrepreneur Dick Robinson.
Then, one sad day, WJNA started to play Rod Stewart's versions of standards, and I screamed bloody murder! (Evidently, I wasn't the only one, because I haven't heard Rod Stewart on WJNA in quite a while.) I felt that if I wanted to listen to Rod Stewart, WJNA wouldn't even be a button on my radio. It took them a while to figure out that the original versions of the standards were what the JNA audience liked; not Rod Stewart!
Another example: Making Whoopie was a very funny song when sung by Eddie Cantor, one of his best. But the only version of it I ever heard on WJNA was by a mumbling couple, which was barely understandable, much less funny.
Equally annoying was WJNA's "Here's the drill" announcer who always sounded like he was talking down to an audience of idiots.
By 2006, WJNA had become even more schizophrenic, trying to keep four diverse audiences happy. Pop/adult music mixed with oldies most of the day. Recycled Music of Your Life shows by Peter Marshall and Wink Martindale at midday. Oldies (better than on the oldies stations) from 7 'til midnight. And then Paul Dunn and his excellent jazz and adult music on East of Midnight.
Think positive. James Crystal just put WJNA out of its misery.
If ManTalk doesn't work, maybe they'll try jazz or classical next.

First of all, let me go on record for saying that WMEN is a silly call for a station for men. At first glance, WMEN sounds like a women's station. (Maybe that's why WMEN is so tiny in the logo, just above the big zero!)
The logo for a women's WMEN would have been a little "O" between the "W" and the "MEN"... call it Freudian, if you must. Like this: WoMEN.
Of course, I still remember the logo for singles station WADY "The Lady." Now THAT was a sexy logo!
WJNA and its frequency of 640 were newcomers as stations go in this market.
Even so, it had made its mark in radio history.
Or at least in South Florida Radio History.
This site includes at least four pages relating to WJNA. Unfortunately, not all have been updated and moved from the old site yet. Links for all will be added to this page.
