So Long, Uncle Neil. We'll Miss You.

(December 31, 2010) ... The biggest radio news story of 2010 for south Florida might well be the last one: our loss of our hometown radio legend Neil Rogers early on Christmas Eve 2010.

In decades on the air in Miami market, talker Neil Rogers was on many stations, most recently WQAM before his sad retirement in 2009.

I, myself, can't honestly write much of a tribute because I only met him once (a radio promotion/singles picnic, of all places) in the early 80s, and I was never really a fan.

But... Radio News contributor George Sheldon (former Clear Channel weather geek) worked with Neil when he (George, not Neil) was a skinny kid (his words, not mine) so he is writing something interesting about Neil in his cynical and inimitable style. When it's uploaded, the link will be here.

I did write a news story about Uncle Neil once, in 1987, when I was covering Broward for The Miami News. A busybody hack politician on the Hollywood City Commission decided they should censure Neil, because he didn't approve of what he said on the program! (Yes, that #$@% John Williams was the instigator.)

Funny thing, my editor assigned me to cover the story and another editor assigned Marvin Glassman. So the folks at the paper combined the stories. (Back in the pre-email 1980s, you phoned in news stories.)

Neil Rogers Criticized by Hollywood City Commission Miami News, 1987

Here's a look at Neil At Night, the TV version of The Neil Rogers Show, from WAMI channel 69.

Yes, Neil Rogers will be missed.

But I can just imagine Neil's response when he arrives at his final destination (whatever you believe that might be) if any, and Neil must answer the inevitable question:

"What the **** is this 'Neil is God' crap all about?"

Sunday Radio In South Florida

(November 30, 2010) ... What's on south Florida radio on Sundays?

If you never can find anything worth listening to, you might enjoy the following article (actually an excerpt from an unpublished longer article) I wrote for the winter edition of WeMerge magazine:
