Supa Cindy Has a Good Ear

Supa Cindy, formerly of 99 JAMZ

CDs of DJ Khaled of 99 JAMZ

Aptitude, Entrepreneurship and Personality tests
(Miami, FL -- June 6, 2008) ... Supa Cindy, who until recently was heard mornings on "99 JAMZ" WEDR, has a very good ear for music.

She immediately recognized the voice of WFOR-TV's reporter Shomari Stone (with anchorman Eliott Rodriguez) when listening to the title track of a promotional copy of rapper Foxy Brown's latest album, Brooklyn's Don Diva.

Supa Cindy had exclaimed "My God, that sounds like Shomari" according to the Miami Herald's Joan Fleischman. The reporters' voices had been sampled from their TV report on Foxy's February 16 release from the Broward County Jail.

You can listen to Eliott Rodriguez mentioning that Foxy was "just released after spending a long night in jail" from the track. Just click here, then scroll down and listen to the excerpt of track #1.

Stone and Rodriguez did not know their voices had been cloned, and apparently neither did CBS or channel 4. They only found out about it after Supa Cindy mentioned it on WEDR's now defunct Big Lip Bandit Morning Show.

For more info, see Joan Fleischman's Miami Herald story, Pretty Foxy: WFOR-CBS4's Stone, Rodriguez.

Supa Cindy was heard weekday mornings on the Big Lip Bandit Morning Show on "99 Jamz" WEDR. Supa Cindy and the Big Lip Bandit were let go by WEDR in June. The show will be replaced with a syndicated morning show in July.

Randi Rhodes BACK On WJNO & WBZT
After Being Deep-Sixed By Air America

(June 5, 2008) ... After she was fired by the Air America radio network for some particularly insensitive (and politically incorrect) remarks at a fundraiser, Randi Rhodes future as a talk star, the brightest in the dim progressive talk firmament, may have been in doubt.

But never fear. Rhodes now has a new syndicator, "The Home of Randi Rhodes & Mike Malloy" Nova M.

Despiite the loss of some affiliates, she's now heard on both WJNO 1290 and WINZ 940 at the same time, from 3 'til 6 PM, following Rush Limbaugh on Clear Channel's somewhat fair-and-balanced WJNO and Thom Hartman on "progressive" WINZ.

Why Is WLRN Pimping For Obama?

(June 2008) ... Shortly after 2 AM one recent Saturday night (which is really Sunday morning) I was listening to Sounds of the Caribbean on WLRN-FM and a very long reggae campaign song came on about Democratic prsidential candidate Barack Hussein Obama. (There is no ambiguity about intent. This song had been specifically described as a campaign song by the author and Obama.)

Why is this newsworthy? Because WLRN is a non-profit station it is not supposed to be involved in politics. It's especially inappropriate because it is owned by a government entity, the Mami-Dade County Public Schools.

Radio Ratings Commentary By George Sheldon

(June 6, 2008)... Formerly a member of Clear Channel's Miami cluster, George Sheldon is still keeping an eye on Miami radio from the hills of western North Carolina, through his numerous spies.

As opinionated as ever, Sheldon has previously penned his opinions on both March Radio Trends and Winter Arbs.

Following is an excerpt from his latest commentary, on the Spring '08 ARBITRENDS:

It's time to talk about the ratings again in the Magic City: Last month we focused on the winter book now the spring trends are here and I would like to focus on the 10 top radio stations in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale market. Continued...

Talk Radiooo Is Back
-- With James Crystal

(June, 2008) ... In this month's installment of Talk Radiooo, James Crystal's Ken Pauli spins the Wheel of Fortune to pick the next new format for the James Crystal stations.

My humble guess is that they'll go brokered, to fill the gap left by WAXY and WVCG when they abandoned their brokered format over the last few years. A lot of good information and music programs were orphaned by those flips. Not just the pill peddlers and financial consultants who are the mainstay of too many brokered stations.

This cartoon, commenting on the recent flips of James Crystal's south Florida stations on 640 and 1400 kHz to a sports format, is based on an out-of-copyright Roue De Fortune tarot card.

"ManTalk 640" WMEN was targeted to hip young men and WFLL 1400 had a Caribbean format. (There were already two sports stations in the Miami market and one in the West Palm Beach market.)

The Talk Radiooo cartoons are an occasional series of editorial cartoons featured exclusively in Radio News, commenting on South Florida radio and other local media.

Because author David Citron can't draw, he uses creative typography plus clip art and/or out-of-copyright images to make his point.

Schnitt's Operation Drill Bit

(Tampa, FL - June 6, 2008)... Todd Schnitt has a great new idea to deal with the oil shortage. Sort of. Well, not really.

Like many people, Schnitt wants us to start drilling for oil in ANWAR and off the Florida coast, so we are less dependent on our terrorist-supporting enemies for this vital resource. That's the good idea part.

Following is the dumb part.

In his Operation Drill Bit, here's what Tood Schnitt wants his listeners to do: "Go to Lowe's or Home Depot or whatever mom & pop hardware store you like, and buy a drill bit to send to your congressman or woman."

Unfortunately, Schnitt has forgotten the anthrax scare.

For years now, mail to congress has been scrutinized at the post office for months before it gets to the intended recipient. If it gets there at all.

Your drill bits will end up in the USPS recycling bin or more likely in a hazardous waste dump. What a waste of time, money, resources, effort -- and probably drill bits made in China. (You wouldn't waste your money on a good one, would you?)

With any kind of luck, your congresscritter will have been defeated for re-election before the post office does its job!

Schnitt, you blew it this time! It's a schnitty idea!

On the other hand...

On the other hand, Newt Gingrich and a number of talk show hosts have more productive angle to promote drilling for oil in ANWAR and on the continental shelf. It's called the Drill Here. Drill Now. Pay Less. Campaign. You can sign the petition at AmericanSolutions.com.

Schnitt is heard on WIOD 610 weekdays at 3 PM, right after Rush Limbaugh. Now that he's been syndicated by Jones, he's also heard on NewsRadio 710 WNTM in Mobile, Alabama, KWHN in Fort Smith, Arkansas KGLN in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, WFLF in Panama City, WFLA in Tampa, WBUV in Biloxi, Mississippi, KLPW in Washington, Missouri, and WSCC in Charleston, South Carolina.

Bruce Kelly Has Left The Building

(Miami, FL -- May 2008) ... After barely a year on Majic 102.7 as Rich Shaw's replacement, Bruce Kelly was unceremoniously dumped by WMXJ after his show on Friday morning April 25th.

See the Miami Herald article, Majic 102.7 dumps Bruce Kelly.

Kelly had been introduced to the Majic 102.7 audience on Rick Shaw's final show, May 11, 2007. See Bruce Kelly Replaces Rick Shaw on WMXJ Morning Show in June 2007 Radio News.

Kelly had pioneered a daily podcast, the Majic Morning Daily Download. In his last installment (linked at right, the celebrity guest was Gary Cole (not Gary Coleman) who was to be a guest on Desperate Housewives.

Kelly told Miami Herald TV Critic Glenn Garvin "My feet were too little for the big shoes of Rick Shaw."

"Bruce Kelly is another morning show casualty of a market that continues to change in its demographics" opines George Sheldon. "The program/operation managers should really take a closer look at Miami and the way it continues to change. Majic 102.7 should have at least waited for the trend to come out because they went up a little."

Less than two months after the change, the Lincoln Financial station has made Kelly's temporary replacement permanent. Now WMXJ morning veteran Donna Davis is accompanied by Joe Johnson on Majic in the Morning, which conspicuously is a generic name, for easier switcheroos. Johnson has been on Majic for 22 years.

Gary Lawrence on YouTube!

(Parkland, FL -- June 30, 2008) ... Jazz and classical pianist Gary Lawrence, star of radio, stage, and screen (A Tickle in the Heart, a documentary about klezmer music) now has new solo recordings available on YouTube.

Featured at right is a seven-minute medley including A Night In Tunisia, Route 66, and several other songs.

Lawrence's recording of Do You Think I'm Sexy? with Tiny Tim has been on YouTube for several years.

Lawrence was bandleader for both adult music WFTL and Music Of Your Life station WLQY. He's now available for bookings, as a soloist or in his band. See Gary Lawrence.

Classical WKCP Now On The Web

South Florida's brand-new classical station WKCP 89.7 can now be seen and heard on the web, at wkcp.org or classicalsouthflorida.org (which actually forwards to classicalsouthflorida.publicradio.org).

WKCP is actively seeking supporters, pointing out on its site that "For seven years, South Florida didn't have a full-time classical music service." (It had actually been a few months less than six years since WTMI's demise on December 31, 2001, but inexplicably I've heard many people who assume that seven is correct without doing the math.)

USB Record Players,
iPods, and MP3 Players

"A gift in any amount before December 31, 2008 makes you a Founding Member of Classical South Florida and entitles you to exclusive benefits including special recognition and invitations to station events" says the station's site. They are also seeking program sponsors.

Classical South Florida is a listener-supported organization affiliated with American Public Media and carrying their content.

Free Talk Live
and WFTL 850

(June 6, 2008)... Talk station WFTL 850 is featured in a recent ad for Free Talk Live in Talkers magazine. The show had been named one of the Talkers 250.

Click on the ad to display a legible full-sized version. Notice the upper right corner, where WFTL is listed as Miami.

WFTL only carries two hours of Free Talk Live on Saturday nights, although it is available from 7 'til 10, six nights a week. Since this is an election year, maybe they'll take the hint.

Fame Games Showcases New Music on ABC Radio

(June 6, 2008)... ABC Radio is promoting Fame Games, a new daily one-hour music program for the younger listeners that advertisers want.

Apparently, its sort of a radio version of American Idol (no, they didn't say that), a showcase with "mo more boring, manufactured music." You can listen to a demo of Fame Games. If you like it, call your friendly neighborhood program director and ask for it.

Fame Games starts on June 30th.

Listen To Neal Boortz Anytime!

(June 2008) ... He's not heard on the air in south Florida any more, but online you can listen to libertarian talker Neal Boortz just about any time, day or night.

These choices are possible because many stations tape-delay him. And that's because his live time slot conflicts with one or more other programs they run.
