(May, 2007) ... "Now I know how Jay Leno feels"
gushed new Majic
morning man Bruce Kelly when he was introduced in the final hour of
Rick Shaw's final morning show May 11th.
(See Rick Shaw's Last Morning on Majic.)
Then, the Monday morning after a gala send-off at Gulfstream
Racetrack for retiring Majician deejay/legend Rick Shaw, listeners
were treated to a new wake-up voice, albeit one with an interesting
history in Miami radio and on satellite radio.
Bruce Kelly, who (as of May 14) is now co-starring on Majic weekday
mornings with Donna Davis, is back in Miami radio after a
quarter-century absence. Kelly was on 96X and Y-100 from 1979 to
1981.
He was one of the original XM programmers and did the 80s on 8 for XM.
At the recent 96X reunion, Kelly was the star attraction among many
accomplished attendees, most of whom had retired from or left radio.
He shared stories of the good old days.
It sounds like the folks at Lincoln Financial have made a great
choice. Only don't let him sneak in any 80s music from XM!
(You may have
noticed that they don't even use the word "oldies" any more on Majic.)
Now you can enjoy The New Majic 102.7 Morning
Show with Bruce and Donna with your coffee weekdays from
5:30 'til to 10 AM on "Majic 102.7" WMXJ. (And we thought Greg
Budell's old Happy Good Morning Wake-Up Show on WJNA had a
too-long name!)
Watch for more about Bruce Kelly in a future edition of Radio News.
Following is a video of an interview with Bruce Kelly, star of XM
Satellite Radio 80's On 8.
Joyce Kaufman fans protested the proposed amnesty bill:
Immigration Proposal Draws Protests in Stuart; Group Plans to Rally Every Wednesday.
(May 2, 2007) ... Last month we reported on Schnitt's version of
the Wikipedia, the
MJpedia. He's not the only one.
Now Glenn Beck has his own self-pedia, currently under
construction due to a recent move. See GlennPedia.
Beck, author of The Real America: Messages from the Heart and Heartland Free Talk Live, the 6-night-a-week libertarian talk show,
has a wiki, too:
The Free Talk Live
Wiki. The web site says "Free Talk Live is the next generation of
issues oriented talk." Free Talk Live is heard Saturdays only from 7
'til 9 PM on WFTL 850.
(May 28, 2007) ... Bring Back The Party is the theme of the MySpace
page of former fans
WPYM was the station that Cox replaced long-time classical
stations WTMI with, on December 31, 2001.
(Atlanta, GA -- May 2007) ... Any time you can create a controversy
with the content of an advertising billboard, and thereby attract a
lot more
attention than you've paid for, that's a home run in this business.
Recently, Atlanta station WSB did just that, with a billboard
To me, it looks like an ad for Hannity's show, quoting his
frequent words! To attract people who share his views, of course --
and get them to listen to his show.
Congratulations to WSB for a clever campaign. Thanks to the folks
at WSB for furnishing the picture.
In Miami, Hannity is heard in Miami on WIOD 610 weekdays from 6 'til 9 PM.
(May 28, 2007) ... Rikkki-Tikki signed off his daily duties at WMXJ
at 9 AM on May 11th. It was a madhouse. Rick's and Donna's voice
mail were full. Celebrities were calling.
Mindy Lang called to appoint him "Guest Chef" of the Majic Cafe.
At right is a historic video of the show, on Majic 102.7, May 11, 2007. The show was streamed on
channel 4's web site.
There was plenty of talk of days past. Favorite bits played
included Shaw's recitations about Veterans' Day and Hurricane Katrina,
about how it could have been us!
Maybe it was just because today was a very special event, but Rick
made it very clear how Majic was different from the cookie-cutter
stations that populate the band today when he said things
like "Classical
music would not be denied its place in rock and roll history,..
Procol Harum Then he introduced his successor, Bruce Kelly, who took the mike
for the last hour of the show.
Finally, he retold the story of his first day on the radio, in
1956... and played his signature song, Goodnight, My Love And the rest is
history. Goodnight, Rick Shaw.

Ol' Days at WQAM Tiger Radio.
(You wouldn't want your show to be cancelled because nobody knows about it!)

Dick Farrel, is now on two stations.
First on WPBR 1340 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 9 'til 10 AM, where he's been for years. Plus, Starting June 2nd, he'll host SwapShop on "Seaview 960" WSVU, from 9 'til 10 AM Saturdays.

Scroll down a bit for info about Red Cross hand-crankable emergency radios that will even charge your cellphone.
(Atlanta, GA -- June, 2007) ... The The Neal Boortz Commencement Speech is odd in that it has never been delivered at a college or a university. Boortz wrote it to protest the fact that such an invitation has never been offered!
"The irony'" says Boortz "is that this commencement speech has been more widely distributed, and has been the subject of more comment than any commencement speech that actually has been delivered at any college or university in the past 50 years.
Read The Neal
Boortz Commencement Speech, which can also be found in his book,
The Terrible Truth About Liberals.
Boortz's latest book is Somebody's Gotta Say It
.
Boortz is heard weekdays from 9 'til midnight on WLVJ 1040.
(W. Palm Beach, FL -- May 1, 2007) --- South Florida's young radio version of Andy Rooney, Dave McBride, has left the WJNO building.
His clever and idiosyncratic Saturday morning news, commentary, and music program, has been cancelled by Clear Channel for the same reason they fire everyone. To cut costs.

JUNE 2007: SECTION 3 of 4 ⇒ Bald Britney
Billboard Save Web Radio · Don Imus · Brokered Program Idea |
||||
Bald Britney Featured on Schnitt Billboard(Tampa, FL -- May 31, 2007) ... Clear Channel's Todd Schnitt may be one of the busiest radio people in Florida, with two different daily radio programs on two different Tampa-area Clear Channel stations. (Like Joyce Kaufman used to do for James Crystal here.)
In the afternoons, he does The Schnitt Show, which originates at WFLA and is heard on WIOD. But mornings he calls himself MJ Kelli, doing a morning show not heard in south Florida. Recently a hairless Britney Spears (bald as a cue ball) was pictured on a billboard used to promote the show, with the caption, TOTAL NUT JOBS. Pictured above is a billboard used to promote the MJ Morning Show. Schnitt is best known for wacky slogans like "Don't touch that dial. It has Schnitt all over it!" and for overdoing the sound effects. Last we heard, he hasn't shaved his head yet. That's bald Britney Spears on the left and Todd Schnitt a/k/a MJ Kelli on the right. Schnitt is heard weekdays from 3 'til 6 PM on WIOD 610. Thanks to the folks at WFLZ for furnishing the picture.

What can you do to save internet radio and local web radio?
A new bill has been introduced in Congress that will save Internet radio from the devastating royalty fee increases that will put thousands of Internet webcasters out of business on July 15th 2007.
Please call your Representative in Congress as soon as possible and urge them to co-sponsor H.R. 2060, the Internet Radio Equality Act. SaveNetRadio.org makes this very easy.
Visit the site and enter your Zip Code. You will be given the phone number to contact your Congressperson along with some excellent talking points to bring up during your call so you won't be wondering what you have to say!
Thanks for your support!
You ever see those commercials for mesothelioma lawyers on late-night TV?
I wonder why none of them (AFAIK) have a brokered mesothelioma radio program, in which they could answer questions about mesothelioma (a kind of cancer caused by asbestos).
Then they could publicize The Florida Mesothelioma Attorneys Radio Show (ow whatever they call it) on those same TV commercials.
If such a brokered radio program fills a need and they make money doing so, what the heck. Just remember it was my idea!
