Special Edition

Four of the stories in this edition are relevant in some way to religion on south Florida radio. And strangely, three of the stories are somewhat related to each other! So they're all on a page together in this special edition of Radio News.

"Hooray! We're going to have a
classical FM station again in south Florida!!"

Christian Music Station WMCU Sold;
To Become All-Classical

(September, 2007).... Arousing the ire of more listeners than any local station flip since the loss of WTMI or maybe Zeta, Trinity International Foundation has announced the sale of its long-time Christian contemporary music station, "Spirit FM" WMCU.

American Public Media Group, the parent organization of Minnesota Public Radio (home of the long-running Prairie Home Companion show) has plans to turn it into a classical music station, a flip that will make former WTMI listeners very happy.

  • WAFG (90.3)
  • WMKL (91.9)
  • W220DU (91.9)
  • W228BY (93.5)
  • W233AP (94.5)
  • W237BD (95.3)

  • "We feel like we play a significant role to what God is doing globally, and these funds will help us do that better," explained Trinity spokesman Gary Cantwell, about the reason for the sale.

In other words, they sold WMCU for the same reason that Marlin Broadcasting sold WTMI six years ago. They saw the dollar signs, and relaized there were better uses for all that money the station could be sold for. Nothing wrong with that, except the disappointed fans the station leave unserved.

But, since the announcement, an amazing number of protesting bloggers have insisted that the WMCU owners have no right to sell the station. One outraged blogger asserted that some activist lawyers plan to either stop the sale or attempt to divert (i.e. steal) the proceeds of the sale to the local Christian community.

If the protesters had asked me, I'd have told them to "get a life" and stop being greedy. Twenty different Christian radio stations of various types, listed at the right, serve the Miami market, including the latest flip, the former WTPS. Isn't that enough? But there is not even one classical station!

Even excluding the eight Christian stations that duplicate the exact same programming, that's still twice as many Christian radio programming choices for Miami listeners as all the talk and sports formats put together.

But Rob Robbins, president of WMKL (91.9 The Call), a competing station, unaffiliated with WMCU,
WMKL "The Call" Tracks Down Pirate Radio Stations
wisely put the WMCU fan protests in perspective. "Yes, I do think that the sale of WMCU is a travesty, but not because of any of the above reasons" said Robbins, referring to similar quotes from protesters. "The sad reason is that the listeners that built it and supported it had the station 'sold out' from under their feet. Was it the organization's legal right to sell it? Yes."

The unfortunate fact is that the fans of classical WTMI, "The Magic Bus" jazz station WBUS, "Party 93.1" WPYM, singles station "The Lady" WADY, "Tiger Radio" WQAM, big band WDBF, oldies WBSS, and rock "Zeta

Danny Tadmore, Host of The Voice of Israel

(July 2007).... Radio host, rabbi, and Kabbalah teacher Danny Tadmore died of leukemia on June 4.

The founder of the Israeli-Jewish radio station Galey Israel, Tadmore was probably best known in south Florida for his Sunday morning Jewish radio program, The Voice of Israel, heard for many years on WTPS's predecessor, WVCG.

    WTPS Flips To Christian Talk

    Memento of WTPS Still Available

(October 19, 2007).... In an doubly ironic switch that may even overcompensate for the loss of WMCU, Black Talk station WTPS 1080 (which had previously been classical WVCG, more than 40 years ago) will be bought by a Christian broadcaster, Salem Radio Network. Salem had bought Classical WKAT 1360 several years ago and flipped it to conservative talk and then to Christian talk.

Syndicated talkers on "The People's Station" WTPS had included
Al Sharpton and author Michael Baisden. WTPS also included weekend Caribbean programming such as Eddy Edwards' Caribbean Riddims.

Radio Ink reports that the former WTPS has already started simulcasting WKAT under a local marketing agreement, and is using the new call WMCU. But an ID heard at 9:04 AM today merely referred to it as WKAT 1360 and WTPS 1080.

The unfortunate demise of Radio One's "The People's Station" WTPS is the latest in a long list of sad stories of stations that had offered unique programming to the community (such as black talk in this case) being replaced by a station duplicating existing programming -- like being the twentieth Christian station in the oversaturated Miami market, per the table in section 1, above. What a colossal waste of bandwidth!

Freethought Radio, For Atheists and Freethinkers

(October 18, 2007).... Freethought Radio, ironically heard on the Air America Network where political correctness rules, may be the "first nationally broadcast radio show from the secular point of view."
Cohosts are Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor -- co-presidents of the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

The humorous and informative show, for freethinkers, rationalists, and atheists, starts with an excerpt from John Lennon's song Imagine: "Imagine there's no heaven... no hell below us, above us only sky."

Freethought Radio went national on Saturday, October 6th, with guest Christopher Hitchens, author of God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything. Freethought Radio is now carried on 18 Air America affiliates, with more to come. Freethought Radio is also heard on XM channel 167.

Ron Reagan, the son of President Ronald Reagan, was interviewed about his acceptance of atheism.

Freethought Radio hasn't yet been picked up by local AAR affiliate WINZ 940 or any station in Florida, but podcasts can be heard at ffrf.org.

Archives online go back to April 2006.

    What is WTPS?

WTPS means a lot of different things around the world. For example, In south Florida, from 2006-2007, it was the Black Talk radio station called The People's Station. In the UK, it's a popular slang term: What The Papers Say. (You can look it up on this dictionary-style T-shirt.) Impress your friends with your international knowledge and this erudite five-color T-shirt! There are also mouse pads, hoodies, and other shirts.

The back of the shirt says What is WTPS? in huge Arial Black letters.

Note: When you click on the What is WTPS? shirt and go to the web site and then click on the View Larger link, you'll be able to see a much enlarged shirt and read it all, front and back.

    Limbaugh Letter on eBay
    Nets $2.1 Million For Marines

(October 19, 2007) ... The eBay auction of Rush Limbaugh's letter has ended, with $2,100,000 raised to support the Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation. The purchaser was bettyc588.

The letter had been sent by Senator Harry Reid and 40 other Democrats (including Teddy Kennedy and Florida senator Bill Nelson), to Clear Channel to misrepresent what Limbaugh had said on the air.

The ebay description of the letter says, in part:

When "Dingy Harry" Reid and the U.S. Senate turned away from the business of the nation to instead smear a private citizen, forty-one of them sent a letter demanding the "repudiation" of their inaccurate interpretation of Rush Limbaugh's comments about Jesse Al-Zaid (a.k.a. Jesse MacBeth) and other "phony soldiers" who falsify their service. This letter was delivered to Mark Mays of Clear Channel Communications, Rush Limbaugh's syndication partner, and widely quoted in the Drive-By Media.

Up for auction is the original letter signed by 41 Democrat senators. This historic document may well represent the first time in the history of America that this large a group of U.S. senators attempted to demonize a private citizen by lying about his views. As such, it is a priceless memento of the folly of Harry Reid and his 40 senatorial co-signers.

Rush Limbaugh discusses the letter on Hannity & Colmes.

    The purchaser will receive:

    1. The original and infamous "Harry Reid Smear" letter, signed by 41 Democat senators
    2. The Halliburton briefcase in which this letter is secured 24 hours a day
    3. A personal letter of thanks from Rush Limbaugh
    4. A photograph of Rush displaying the letter on stage in Philadelphia on October 11th
