"There are more people in line to buy a Playstation 3 than were standing in line last week to vote." ... Neal Boortz, 11/17/06
Courtney Cox?Just now I noticed that it said Courtney Cox at the top of the file (for WBGG's Courtney Young and Cox Radio's adding HD to its Miami stations) and said to myself... Courtney Cox? Isn't that someone famous?

LOCAL RADIO BLOWS IT
|
||||||||
|
|
It reinforces how abysmally bad local radio has become since consolidation of ownership in companies like Clear Channel (which owns about 37 stations between the Treasure Coast and the Keys) and James Crystal (which owns six stations in the West Palm beach market), among others.
Sadly, I still fondly remember when WFTL 1400 was proudly Broward's *LOCAL* station. They used to report live from the lobby of the Broward County Courthouse on every election night, where the employees of supervisor of elections Jane C. Carroll were writing numbers on huge blackboards.
What programming did the new high-power WFTL 850 have last night three hours after the polls closed? Syndicated Laura Ingraham!
Here's what happened on our supposed news/talk stations, between about 9:30 and 10:15. Fortuitously, I had been in Boca Raton, so on the way home I was able to pick up some Palm Beach market stations I don't otherwise hear after dark, scanning up and down the dial all the way home.
Miami Market: You wouldn't even know it's election day!
![]() Dave McBride's CD (Like Andy Rooney, but smarter) |
WPB Market: Four out of five stations presented syndicated programs, some tape-delayed.
Excluded from my short survey was CC talk station "Real Radio"
WZZR 94.3, which, with programs like Love Doctors and Lex & Terry, never really created any expectations of election news.
Give James Crystal an F for their nonexistent election coverage and give Clear Channel a C, which is the average of an A+ for Dave McBride and company and their stellar coverage on WJNO and an F for baseball and Air America on their Miami stations.
Earlier in the day, WIOD was advertising that they'd have coverage on the web until radio coverage starts after the game. It shows their priorities, doesn't it?
Considering that James Crystal's WFTL claims to be the station covering Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and the Palm Beaches, I'd say that collectively, the election night public service by their stations sucks.
It should be noted, however, that WFTL's sole local daily talkmaster, Joyce Kaufman, presented am excellent mid-afternoon show, even speaking to local city officials about the issues. No syndicated program can match that.
Maybe I complain about talk radio a lot, but when they do something right, I think it should be recognized.
Considering that we had a gubernatorial race, a senate race, and races for dozens of seats in congress, the state legislature, and municipal positions in the three-county area ... plus constitutional questions and local referenda ... There was plenty of info to fill a whole evening of election news, without taking the lazy, cheapskate route of syndicated fare as usual. A big nasty Bronx cheer for abandonment of public service to all of our supposed news/talk stations ... except for WJNO 1290. Now I know who takes news seriously and who just uses it as a word in their promos.

96X Reunion Planned(November 11, 2006) ... Stuart Elliott and other former 96X folks are planning a reunion to remember the good ol' days at the station, which went off the air about 26 years ago. An official reunion date hasn't been set yet. They're still trying to track down some missing people. Stu wrote the following for Radio News: 96X...GONE, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN. 96X (WMJX 96.3) was euthanized by the FCC on February 15th, 1981 at 12:03AM. I was the last voice, as well as the one who pushed the transmitter button, shutting us off for the last time.
It's not often when a station goes dark, that staff members keep in touch over the years when you leave a radio station. In many cases, it's "Take care..keep in touch", "I'll be talking to you" or "Let me know where you wind up". 96X was different. Unlike radio of today, 96X had a bunch of people that were friends as well as co-workers. We were like a family. With radio of today, you're lucky to know very little about your co-workers, let alone have that personal connection we had. It's been almost 27 years since I signed off my radio station (I call it my station, because I started my career in radio at 96X with their inception in 1975, leaving during the Disco96 phase and returning till sign off, thus being the longest surviving staff member). But, it still lives on in the soul of former staff members and even listeners.
Another 96X reunion is in the works and we're looking for former air staffers or South Florida announcers who were around during the days of X. If you'd like to join us, whether to see long-lost friends, catch up on who's doing what or just talk about the good ole days, contact me at: the96Xfactor@aol.com or check out The 96X web site on Myspace and we'll keep you informed on when and where the reunion will take place.
Keep on X'in!
Stuart Elliott Thanks, Stu! Watch for more info about the 96x Reunion after the first of the year! |

WXEL Brings Doo-Wop Back To The AirwavesWest Palm Beach, Florida -- WXEL 90.7FM and PBS "Doo Wop" Guru TJ Lubinsky have teamed up to bring classic 1950s doo wop music back to the radio airwaves beginning Saturday, November 11th from 6pm -- 8pm on WXEL 90.7FM with "The Doo Wop Jukebox."
Hosted by TJ Lubinsky, "The Doo Wop Jukebox" will feature weekly live caller requests, backstage in-depth artist profiles and exclusive interviews, rare concert performances and original hit recordings from the biggest and best loved music legends of the 1950s rock and pop era including Johnny Maestro and The Brooklyn Bridge, The Duprees, Little Anthony and The Imperials, The Skyliners, The Flamingos, The Five Satins, The Penguins and hundreds more. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring the most loved songs of the 1950s vocal group era back to local oldies fans abandoned by commercial radio just because they are over the age of 50", exclaims TJ Lubinsky, the creator and executive producer of the PBS "My Music" and "American Soundtrack" series of doo wop specials on television, "for me this is a dream come true to share the original records, and stories of the original artists in a weekly forum for music lovers of all ages -- by request and commercial free. WXEL is uniquely positioned to bring the musical heritage of our lifetimes to local airwaves, and to help preserve our memories and the artists' legacies for history". Lubinsky has reunited, recorded and produced hundreds of doo wop groups from the golden age of American rock and pop history. To date, TJ's television concerts seen on PBS member stations nationally have collectively raised more than $250 Million Dollars in viewer contributions for public television since 1995, when he first began producing local doo wop specials on WXEL TV-42. If I remember (and get up early) I may listen all three times. Why don't you take a break from football and parades for this historic and funny song!
"Big 106" WBGG will also play the song, but specific times have not been announced.

(August, 2006) ... Syndicated talker Tammy Bruce, who had been heard on WFTL some weekends, in addition to when she substituted for Laura Ingraham, also has her own daily show. Finally her show is heard locally: on "ManTalk 640" WMEN overnights, from 1 'til 4 AM. ManTalk's only female talker and arguably their best, exiled to the middle of the night! Tammy Bruce is the author of three books:

A Different FTL: Free Talk Live(Keene, NH -- November 8, 2006) ... Still in the doldrums over WFTL's dropping libertarian Neal Boortz last month? (If you're unfamiliar with the term, libertarian is a freedom-oriented philosophy that's an alternative to the big-spending big-government RepubliCrats and DemoPublicans.) Now there's an entirely different kind of FTL you can listen to live online evenings or later via podcast. In this case, FTL stands for Free Talk Live, a nightly talk show originating in New Hampshire, hosted by Sarasotan Ian Bernard and his co-host Mark, from Tampa. I asked Ian to describe how FTL is different from syndicated talker Neal Boortz. "Boortz is libertarian on some issues but supports plenty of big government" says Ian. "My co-host Mark is a small government libertarian. I am a Free Market libertarian. I have no use for government, period." Some libertarians might find Ian's position extreme, but no matter. FTL is still more informative than bloviating Bill O'Reilly, radical Randi Rhodes, and the like. No party talking points here; Ian and Mark even argue with each other! No south Florida stations carry Free Talk Live (yet). Wouldn't WFTL be a great spot for FTL? But if you're elsewhere in Florida, FTL can be heard on WUTL 106.1 in Tallahassee and on WWPR 1490, Tampa Bay. Or listen at freetalklive.com or subscribe to their podcast.
Free Talk Live started on the Florida Suncoast, three years ago, on Real Radio 105.9, a Hot Talk station that had never had a local talk show before. "Free Talk Live wouldn't be where it is without our listeners. Currently 300 listeners are providing our entire monthly promotional budget!" adds Ian. "They are awesome." For an example of what is heard on FTL, the last hour of the November 8 show included discussion of micro-broadcasting and abolishing the FCC (in addition to election results, of course). Although I didn't have my demo, I put together a resume and gamely dropped in at the local Clear Channel cluster. Mind you, I worked for CC in Providence, but when I asked if anyone would take a moment to see me, the receptionist flatly told me if I didn't have an appointment, I would have to leave.
I was shocked, SHOCKED! Not even a tour of the facility or a little professional courtesy. As I stomped out of the lobby, I waved my fist in the air and shouted that I would be back and the next time, I would walk through the employee entrance.

Four months later, the program director flew me down for an interview, picked me up in a limo, put me at the Don Shula and bought me dinner. I started working at Big 105.9 two weeks after that. (I love that story!)
About her favorite CDs, Courtney said "I've pared down my
collection to a lot of "Best Of"
stuff. I think Cat Stevens
Best Of is still one of my favs, Full Moon
Fever from Tom Petty
and anything by Led Zeppelin
."
Courtney Young, who just celebrated her third anniversary on November 1, can be heard weekdays from 10 AM 'til 3 PM on "Big 106" WBGG-FM.

(November 10, 2006) ... Brokered programs on non-English stations are scamming new immigrants who don't know any better -- and station management doesn't even understand what they are broadcasting.
Jennifer Levitz reported in The Wall Street Journal October 31 that "Fraudsters seeking to take advantage of immigrants are finding an easy route via radio stations that lease blocks of air time to anyone willing to pay." The latest scam took advantage of 631 Haitian immigrants over a two-year period on Kreyol-language station WLQY 1320.
Other ethnic (but not Kreyol) stations in other parts of the country have had similar occurrances.
Levitz quotes WLQY manager Rick Santos, who doesn't speak Kreyol, as saying "It's not really our job to find out if these businesses are legitimate or not."
Read Levitz's story, Scams Use Leased Radio Time To Target Immigrant Listeners.
Cox has added HD to its four Miami market stations: WHDR 93.1 "93 Rock" ... WFLC 97.3 "97.3 The Coast" ... WEDR 99.1 "99 Jamz" ... and WHQT 105.1 "Hot 105 FM".
We're eagerly waiting for word on when they start musticasting, because fans of the two previous formats on 93.1 are still resentful and without a radio home. Those, of course, are Classical WTMI (1971-2001) and Party 93.1 (2001-2005).
Cox HD Stations can be heard online at Cox Radio HD.
(San Antonio, TX -- November 17, 2006) ... Clear Channel is planning to sell 448 of its radio stations outside of the top 100 markets and announced Thursday it has agreed to be acquired for about $18.7 billion by an investment group.
The stations to be sold will include those in the keys (market #291) but not the Miami and Palm Beach markets.
In the Florida Keys, CC owns WAIL-FM, WEOW-FM, WKEY-FM, WKWF-AM, WFKZ-FM, WKEZ-FM, and WCTH-FM (Homestead).
